Addendum: I am a Christian. This colors my view somewhat. I believe that this society should be one where people are free to believe whatever they want, because this also allows me freedom to follow my conscience and my G-d. And that is why John Brown's Body reverberates for me:

Because while America as it exists in any given moment is corrupt and broken and has many people who want to master their fellow humans, America the ideal is still a good thing many of us yearn for. America, the ideal, is still worth dying for, and working toward, out of love for my neighbors.
