It's a different matter, but one thing the cyberattack exposed is that the Library needs better *core* funding for catalogue maintenance and ordinary unglamorous tasks -- whereas external funders like shiny projects and exhibitions. It is a core national institution and must be treated as one.

(My understanding from several members of staff is that they found out about the plans on an all-staff call shortly before the email went out to all users. That does not speak to a leadership which recognises and values its staff. I sometimes wonder if it needs an external Visitor or similar.)

I've signed this and hope you will too. Senior management at the library has been a shitshow for a while. Above all, they have got it into their heads that they are an institution like the V&A or the British Museum, and should be chasing revenue in like manner. But the British Library is a Library.

The extension (which will contain no new reading rooms and no new on-site storage) is a misbegotten catastrophe. The transformation of half the site into a BL-branded WeWork is stupid. The Library will only really be saved when its senior management stop trying to make it into something else.
