You've got a point there. Until the Midterms, many Republicans had a big incentive not to fall out of Trump's grace, knowing that he could boost another candidate instead of them. After the Midterms, the day is coming closer when, at least by constitutional standards, Trump's presidency will end...

... as well, once their regime falls. So they will try to cling to power no matter what. The good thing is that, like in any autocracy, Trump hesitates to decide for a successor, and even if he somehow tries to override the constitution and run for a third term, biology will end his "era" ...
