Again, for the avoidance of doubt lest this be positively or negatively read as whataboutery: Russia is an imperialist state, its aggression towards Ukraine and its other neighbours is unforgivable, and it is absolutely morally imperative to support Ukraine in defending its people and sovereignty.

I mention these two examples as they’re the ones I’ve seen the most egregious hypocrisy on this past week or so, but also because I believe we will only ever have a just and peaceful international order for anyone if we insist on it for everyone, even if it involves tough choices and sacrifices now.

And if you want to make it clear that imperialism is bad, challenge it as component of Russian identity, push for it to atone for it in relations with its former victims, then you ought to recognise the necessity of Britain doing that too, given the economic and political legacies it’s bequeathed.

More explicitly, if you argue for punitive sanctions against Russia for its aggression, deem it as a society to be culpable for the actions of its government, dismiss the historical roots of its paranoia as explanation for its conduct, there is no moral reason not to take the same stance on Israel.

For the avoidance of doubt: this applies significantly less to the current UK foreign secretary, who I admire more than pretty much any other major British politician of his generation, than it does to the UK centre left as a whole (and I speak as someone who’d identity as on the UK centre left).
