    I'm personally more interested in how people reach or justify their views than whether they're sincere (whatever that means) and that's where I think the fandom angle is useful. People develop their beliefs based on the communities they belong to, but it's not "groupthink" if they're critical.

    So when we talk about people ending up with weird beliefs, it's useful to see those beliefs as resulting from dynamic discussions that are shaped by norms rather than being imposed by the group as (literal) orthodoxy. It's the norms that interest me because they're tacit but they decide so much.

    Not really! That's more about a category of mental states that seem to act like beliefs but either aren't sincerely held or are otherwise not truth-asserting (like speculative hypotheses.) @mrxdentith.com actually gave a talk about that topic at UoW earlier this year because it's a live debate.

    I'd argue we (NZ and Aus alike) collectively take a way too disproportionate interest in US politics. I don't get people who seem more engaged with it than our own. Our elections should be presented as clearly more important to the ordinary viewer, and the US as one contest among many worldwide
