When I was covering Africa a decade ago I - and every other journalist I knew - got endless flak from white academics in America for writing about war and dictatorship rather than I don't know, mutual aid in villages, because it "perpetuated damaging stereotypes".

An important and under-appreciated thing about corruption. It doesn't only do damage economically, though it does. It is also a means of undermining democracy and concentrate executive power. Corruption is how you reward allies, control the private sector and punish opponents outside of the law
