These objects evolved over time from being strictly utilitarian into objects of extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship, as can be seen in the detail of this piece which measures at only 1.8 centimetres tall. See it on display in Gallery 37, Level 2.

This delightful object is an ojime in the form of a fruit basket. It dates from 19th-century Japan. An ojime is a bead used to fasten the drawstring of a purse, or the cords of an inrō (tiered lacquer carrying case). They are often intricately carved from materials like wood, lacquer, or metal.
