The lesson here surely is that going along with all the mad deregulation requests of the tech industry isn't just bad for everyone else, its bad for them as well. LLMs are an incredible technology and yet the public mostly associates them with hallucinations, slop, job losses, and copywrite theft

Yes! All of which could have been avoided with better regulation from the get-go. A basic finding of economics is that good industries are built on good regulation! Underregulated industries will eventually destroy themselves and leave a whole lot of collateral damage

Also associated with a significant carbon footprint, excessive water consumption, pollution by data centers, misinformation, lack of transparency & accountability, and, existential risks, I would add.
