Post anzeigenI'd say the commons isn't shared facts or a single public, it's shared practice. Publics will fragment regardless, what matters is whether they're doing verification and deliberation legibly, and whether that inquiry actually connects to accountability.
Post anzeigenIt's really just Lippmann and Dewey in the 21st century information environment, and I believe we need a Deweyan approach of building public capacity for inquiry, not the Lippmannian expert layer telling insitutions what to tell the public, but the latter seems to be the default response.
Post anzeigenI think media gatekeeping is widely accepted in communication studies, in terms of journalists, editors, and producers select what information reaches the public. That was part of the 20th century system in part because of limited resources for gathering, verifying and distributing information.
