The media and transphobic lobby's reaction to this is both depressing and entirely predictable. It fundamentally stems from the ideology that children are property that must act, think, and feel according to the desires of their parents. It comes from the idea they aren't people, they're owned.
Post anzeigenThis ideology is as profoundly gross as it is pervasive. It is why so many parents are fine with queer people in theory, but baulk when it is their child, their property. The neighbour can do what they like in their garden, but this is my lawn, my roses. They will grow to my will.
Post anzeigenIt has to be called out for the dehumanising, abusive logic that it is, and it has to be made to stop. Children need to be recognised as full people deserving of the same right to self conception as anyone else. Anything less is a mockery of morality.
Post anzeigenEven beyond the deceit, self of otherwise, of Rowling's framing, it also betrays a profoundly gross liberal attitude. An idea that if the "debate" about minority existence and enfranchisement is had in a sufficiently polite way then it is fine for them to be made to disappear. It's not.
Post anzeigenFurthermore it shows how no amount of capitulation will ever be enough. Stonewall has bent the knee to transphobes and all it has received in recompense is a scolding. You cannot compromise with these people, there is no mid ground they will accept.
