It looks like something out of a fairytale, but this is St Mary’s Church at Jackfield in the Ironbridge Gorge. I like the way the church stands out in the morning sunshine, with the background trees in shadow. St Mary’s was built in 1863 using locally sourced materials, including tiles #Shropshire

Ochre is common at Middle Stone Age sites in southern Africa, but what it was mixed with rarely survives. At Blombos Cave, people combined it with bone and charcoal 100,000 years ago.
