So I think this is the crux of our disagreement. I think I agree with you on the value of liberalism, pluralism, cooperation across difference, etc. I even agree states played some role in enabling liberalization at times. But states still have fundamental moral, incentive, & epistemic problems.
Post anzeigenYou are onto something that polycentricity is important, but if polycentric institutions are still organs of the same body with the exclusive power to wield force against me legitimately, then ultimately the same problem I have remains.
Post anzeigenThe problems I have with the state don't come really down to it being a unitary actor. That is a big part of it, but the ultimate and I think most intractable problem is, should my interests come into conflict with "the state", I have don't really have a means of saying "no."
Post anzeigeni think "the state" as a unit of analysis exaggerates the problems, because states actually aren't unitary actors in a lot of circumstances, and that is exactly what can moderate their problematic aspects when well-designed. checks and balances, and so forth.
Post anzeigenand more saliently, i exited one legal domain that was oppressive in ways i could not tolerate (Texas) and joined another that was much more tolerable overall (NY), although not without tradeoffs of the NIMBY variety. exit still exists, albeit possibly more complex than at points in the past.
