all this is to say that "Adorno hated jazz" isn't just reductive + unproductive for music studies, but wrong. the fact that a take is easy to take up doesn't entail a warrant to not poke at whether it actually holds up.

the passage is full of lines of thought that may seem contradictory to one another – some awful, some genuinely insightful on their own, others narrative.

the place of said line can be interpreted in the (longass) passage as one response to the (inadequate) idea that jazz is irrational + transcends rationality because of ~the listener~.
