And it could be Van Hollen and the incoming class using leverage to move Schumer’s agenda and get assurances. But it’s happening all over the place and it seems like Van Hollen took exception to Schumer today saying he would be re elected majority leader.

And for the record it really feels right now like it’s coalescing around Van Hollen as the alternative. You don’t see a tenured member getting out of the starting blocks like this the day after a landslide election very often.

Signals are being sent out very loudly and very early that there is a potential take down of Schumer, which will set off a flurry of conversations and negotiations and hubub. These things don’t get mentioned like this by so many people without some coordination and discussion.

Van Hollen, Flanagan, El-Sayed, Jackson, Hamilton, and Stratton have said they either don’t want Schumer as majority leader or that they’re not sold yet. Talarico and Pappas both stressed “new blood” This is not inevitable and there is an incredible amount of chatter for this point in the process
