i think we agree pretty hard, actually. i'm less interested in more mechanistic theories, given how many earnest and brilliant people care about them passionately already. i do hope they will figure it all out.

i care much more about the vast domains of language use and linguistic patterning that get ignored entirely when the only metaphysical question anyone wants to ask is how much of and what parts of our linguistic constructions is innate.

what gets ignored, despite obvious importance, is the need to theorize linguistic creativity beyond the age of about 5, and the possibility that linguistic theory could be relevant to things like literacy and rhetoric and cultural competence.
