If you think P3 having three types of physical damage, or P5 having 8 types of magic is wild, Persona 1 is positively deranged. Each weapon type is a different form of Physical damage.

It's a mechanic Hashino borrowed from SMT3, which he also directed. In Mainline it makes sense because "your demon allies contracts are null and void if you die", but P3 kept it as a balancing factor against the MC being the Wildcard and so they never let it go.

In mainline SMT it makes sense, because the player character is the only human in the party, everyone else are demons you contract. If you go down, the demons will break out of their contract and go free. It's only P4 and P5 who do it for no real reason outside of following P3+Mainline norms.

Tactica depends on the stage who can be "expendable" due to plot, the Persona Qs also continue even if the protags get knocked out. Can't really include Dancing or the Arenas because those are inherently not party member games.
