On balance, I think if Labour were elected on a clear manifesto mandate and supported by LD, Greens, devolved govt leaders then there’s an argument against all the problems of a referendum 🤞🏻 But I’m no expert!

If I remember initial membership was achieved without a referendum and the vote in 1975 was held as a reaction to that. Referendum are a rubbish way to make big decisions IMHO.
