You are correct that non-violence is a central tenet of Quaker faith and practice. I would not injure another person in self-defense. But telling a trespasser that they are on camera while holding a shotgun pointed at the ground has so far deterred them all.

I don’t speak for other Quakers, just for myself. So please don’t take my words as more than one person’s opinion. Here’s the original peace testimony from the Faith and Practice book used by Quakers since 1651, which explicitly rejects violence. qfp.quaker.org.uk/chapter/24/

Many Quakers own guns. My husband and I keep a shotgun handy on the farm to protect children and pets from venomous snakes, feral hogs, mountain lions, and idiots from Dallas or Shreveport who think a country barn is the perfect place from which to steal. You can be a non-violent gun owner. I am.
