It can also be incredibly hot in spring, but summer is a no-no… Before last week, my previous trip was early December with a group of students, and we just missed some heavy flooding, so there's that to bear in mind, too. I would say that mid-October is the sweet-spot for a first-time visitor.

I've not been for many years and Venice is one of those places that is always in the process of getting more debased by mass tourism, but certainly in my time there October-November, or maybe March-April were the ideal times.
