I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

Though I don't claim that politics is all pragmatism, I believe there is a strong pragmatic national interest in re-establishing EU freedom of movement to benefit other urgent policy concerns. The job of politics is not to suggest that important conversations should happen - it is to have them.

There really is a danger that Burnham’s desire to push forward with English devolution will fall over because not enough attention has been paid to capacity building. GM has spent two decades doing this and you can’t quickly replicate it elsewhere.
