More explicitly, if you argue for punitive sanctions against Russia for its aggression, deem it as a society to be culpable for the actions of its government, dismiss the historical roots of its paranoia as explanation for its conduct, there is no moral reason not to take the same stance on Israel.

Many years ago, I met Patrick Stewart. He’d read a piece I’d written about my difficult relationship with my dad. I was supposed to interview him about the film he’d just made but he didn’t care about that. He’d had a hard time with his dad too and the pair of us just talked about fathers and sons

We chatted about what it meant to be a man, our own families, and trying to be better dads than our own fathers. It was a lovely day. He wasn’t a star. He was just a decent guy with the courage to show his emotions to a stranger who was also a writer. If you want a role model for young men: he’s it
