I agree, I think we (programmers) are a lot like the 'Human Computers' of old. Big companies used to have rows and rows of employees that would just do one function, like add numbers or subtract them all day.

My advice would be not to get too locked into a game engine while you're starting as well, try different ones out and see if one fits you more. If you're looking at 2D specifically then I'd look at GameMaker Studio as well.
