    To use the hackneyed phrase, there is, literally "nothing Labour about" reducing the administrative burden on business. Most of that administrative burden comes from trade union victories of the last century. There is no way past this.

    There is something about the Labour Party which makes them unable to understand that employment regulation is regulation, employment bureaucracy is bureaucracy, and outside a few regulated industries, "business" experience of "red tape" is almost entirely what they call "improving worker's rights"

    Yeah my dad made a very similar decision when his mother died in c. 1990. (I think being estranged was logistically loads easier in the past, and maybe people didn't notice you were doing it? Move away, card at Xmas, job's a good 'un.)

    My partner recently had to make a decision about whether she was obligated to go to the funeral of her estranged, emotionally abusive mum who hadn't spoken to her in years. She (rightly in my view) decided she had no such obligation. So yeah, it happens and isn't really new.
