Is it a pain in the butt: Yes Does it take some specialized training: Yes And swing states like NC have to dig into our provisional ballots pretty often! So swing states build up a nice thick bench of trained ballot cure volunteers. Mississippi…has not traditionally been considered a swing state

If the race gets really close, then we break the glass. It's time to pull out the provisional ballots & start going through them one by one. Contact the voter, confirm they're a real person, etc. This process is called "chasing" and "curing" ballots!

If you show up to vote but something's a little off (you came to the wrong polling location, your address has changed, etc) In most cases you can vote anyway! They just put your ballot in a separate, "Break glass in case of emergency" pile. (AKA a "provisional ballot.")
