exoplanets update: WD 1856+534 b is so large compared to its parent star that it does in fact block ~57% of its light for the duration of its transit. also its orbital period is almost a day and a half so it's large and very close to the star. which is why it occludes the star for ... eight minutes.

so, the kids in my backyard face cuts even though only 57 cents of each dollar that i send to the school system goes to them. and why don't those rural schools have money? because the state hands out huge tax cuts to property owners there. they *could* be paying. but the state hates cities.

this is, on its face, fine! I don't *really* mind some of my tax dollars making sure that some kid who was unfortunate enough to be born in bumfuck nowhere has a decent school the problem is in who decides the budgets and where they go

stuff like "dan patrick being gone means weed is gonna be legal very soon", stuff like "you have no idea how fucked up our school system is because of vouchers + the specific way recapture works" not all of this is *easy* to fix but it's at least *possible* now
