ohhh that "even what the text is" part is SO interesting! wow. smth i think is unique abt fic is its social dependence. like it's very openly a response to other fic and invites response in a way other work doesn't. so thinking of comments/interaction around a fic as part of the text is super cool
Post anzeigensorry to TRIPLE REPLY lmao but also, older fic archives get incorporated into ao3 all the time so that fic doesn't get lost. the authors didn't all consent to that. but it's a preservation thing, and i think it's good! in this context though, ao3 is down for 2-4 weeks. let's not do anything drastic
Post anzeigeni also think sometimes people get in the self-righteous philosophical weeds without considering the common sense part of it. like you said, context! just bc something's okay in one context doesn't make it normal or cool in every context. everyone could stand to chill a little bit as usual loll
Post anzeigeni've been having a lot of these same thoughts! like if you're uploading a book that's out of print forever, there's a preservation argument there that i think is important. it's part of culture! that's public and shared. i think there's definitely some philosophical untangling that can happen
Post anzeigeni do agree tbh that sometimes fic authors get a little precious about wanting to control every aspect of how people interact with our fic when i don't think it's fair to ask for that. but i think publicly sharing our work in the forums of our choosing is more than fair. link back to us 💕
