Florida Republicans failed to flip any of the 4 Dem seats they targeted in 2026, but their House gerrymander may have cost Dems 6 other seats. With a nonpartisan map like this one, Dems may have also won districts 5, 7, 13, 15, 27, and 28. Florida will likely be 20-8 GOP instead of tied 14-14

🧵: I think gerrymandering cost Texas Dems roughly 10 House seats despite the GOP losing 6 intended seats and nearly several more. Texas’ geography would be awful for them without gerrymandering. Suburban Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston would have been a bloodbath like in the statewide races

The whole Texas map was already gerrymandered, but the GOP tried to target 5 more seats. The 2 seats Dems flipped would have done so on the old map and may have already been blue without gerrymandering. Gerrymandering also cost Dems full control over state governments covering 16-19% of Americans

One way to interpret this is that the current US House still has an artificially high number of Republicans and after Texas is redistricted it will be even harder than it now looks for the GOP to retake it in 2028.

Another though is just the sobering point that the CW “Republican gerrymandering didn’t work” is wrong. Gerrymandering worked and state parties will keep doing it unless federal law or constitutional reinterpretation stops them.
