All the same, I do kind of get it. In modelling the competition and spread of alleles, it can be useful to adopt a kind of "replicator" stance, "selfish" stance and "agent" stance. But we need to be explicit that this is not an ontology - and that's what seems to be missing.

"You could pick a different word"... There already is a different word: replicand. Why not use it? Why redefine words when you don't need to? Why not wonder about the rhetorical work being done by the elision? Oh, and we haven't even started on "selfish" (which you rightly questioned too.)
