The BBC's coverage was maddening but the fault lies squarely with Mahmood. She gave government authority to a wholly misleading statistic & is now being battered with it. Governments have to talk more honestly to the public about migration, not keep bricking themselves in with fantasy & falsehood.

This was very common in Civil Service. Bring people in with "real world experience", that don't understand policy or politics, struggle to work in a big organisation with lots of interconnections. Civil Servants are greatly underapreciated for their ability to navigate it.

On a related matter, as a secondary Deputy Head I once spoke at a business meeting who were complaining about the state of young people entering the workplace....and I told them to visit schools to 'improve' things. Again, met with 'no way', laughter. So, I told to shut up then. Went down well.
