For my #superseabirdsunday here's a replica of a Great Auk. The last one of these was "collected" in 1832 on Papa Westray. It was known by the islanders as "King Auk". His "Queen" had been stoned while on a nest two years previously. The last of all of them was killed in Iceland in 1844.

The every ends of the bill are often pale in all the tits - it's where the horny sheath gets thinner and a bit translucent or unpigmented. Might also be to do with the hammering it takes as they feed and hammer at stuff.
