Curious paradox that the very same people who say that our nation cannot possibly be responsible for the actions of our ancestors past... continue to bask in the reflective glory of wars that were fought long before any of us were born by people who are no longer here.

I do not understand why either Starmer or Burnham (or indeed Mahmoud) thinks it is wise or good to allow this to continue any more. Indeed to start it at all Meanwhile black-masked men en masse were allowed to take to our street largely unstopped. It looks upside down.

This is what Russia would do on a national scale if an Ukraine-wide ceasefire was agreed. It’s why Russia must be militarily defeated.

Should we be proud that we acted to suppress the slave trade? Sure. But that fact has two important sequelae: (1) It is necessarily implicit in our suppression of the trade that we knew it was wrong; and (2) it is equally implicit that we accepted we should never have been involved in it.

I don’t understand why there is so much hand-wringing about whether or not to apologise for our nation’s involvement in the slave trade. We were involved; it was wrong; an apology is simply an acknowledgement of the undeniable; it has no adverse consequence and is cost-free. Get on with it.
