Not least because it seems likely that the kinds of welfare payments (pensions etc) would almost always be proportional to current real incomes. And hence their absolute growth is because the economy has grown since 1950.

If you really can’t avoid cuts in news why not a bit less reportage on the US midterms, where it is fine to recycle abundant US domestic coverage? Can’t turn to the NY Times for analysis of whether abolishing NHS England is a good or bad idea

Right. I might regret this, but it's late so I might as well wade in without the full facts... But I can take a guess why he has gone down this route (and it isn't "the latent misogyny of the judiciary"). We have to remember that in Youth Courts custody is officially a last resort...

i once saw paddy ashdown on the train, in standard class, talking very intensely about politics with the person opposite him. i thought, that must be someone he works with, but then the train got to waterloo and paddy said “well, nice to meet you…” and it turns out he was just chatting to a stranger
