They are failing. That is the good news. But when people like Miller are being elevated in a situation where delusion, authoritarian desires, ideological zealotry, ineptitude, and mounting desperation all combine, things are bound to escalate further. And that means they will cause enormous harm.

I really don't think there is a realistic pathway for MAGA to get from here to consolidated authoritarian rule - mostly because they never understood that even authoritarian regimes depend on political legitimacy to get enough people to comply. But that doesn't mean they're not dangerous anymore.

What does an authoritarian government do when it is so diminished in legitimacy that it simply no longer has a realistic path to consolidated autocracy? This is where the gravest danger lies: Fueled by a sense of having burned all bridges behind them, extremists like Miller will seek to escalate.
