- to retrospectively fill this gap we need protocols and infrastructure like atproto that provide authority at an account-level outside of any origin, a freely addressable data model, distribution (i.e. sync protocols), and new social affordances (e.g. backlinking).

- alternative protocols/infra to fill this gap never emerged - the semantic web focused on making the web more informational not more social - OpenID didn't have counter-power even with it's successful adoption - RSS, web mentions, ActivityPub all tried to build interop on top of the origin

- most people had little incentive to have a website (i.e outside of blogging a personal website is not social) or the literacy to make one - Creating an account inside of someone else's origin to socialize with others captured this gap

- additionally, linking *content* as the only social affordance the web provides is a quite a limited form of expression outside of blogging and forums - this created an infrastructural gap between how most people wanted to use the web and how they could only do that inside someone else's origin
