Watching a film starring Gail Russell (The Uninvited, 1944) is always such a bittersweet experience. She was so good in everything yet had such a short, tragic life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Ru...

Something quite extraordinary. "Beggars of Life", starring Louise Brooks - Reel one of the lost synchronised sound version, courtesy of The Vitaphone Project on YouTube. Thanks to @neilkbrand.bsky.social for flagging this up. Amazing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo4V...

It isn't all perfect. It switches focus to the police procedural after about an hour, which is pretty boring and doesn't even add to the plot. The coppers are spectacularly dim, and they just got on my nerves

Eyes Without a Face (1960). Perfect title. Édith Scob's huge human pain-filled eyes set in that pristine mask is one of the most disturbing images I know. The mask itself is an inspired creation, so perfect it's monstrous. Who could have made it? Where is it now? Can people try it on? Would I dare?
