i'm thinking the togawa-vampires become obligate hematophages during adolescence but are already born with the ability to digest blood and have a taste for it somewhat. so um. hatsune, who doesn't know any of that, 8 years old, sucking on a monkey corpse she found like it's jerky.... Yeah

hematophagy is a ridiculously efficient way to feed so i think a sort of tenuous biological immortality (instead of "stay frozen as who you are at the moment of turning") can work. you don't stop aging per se, your body just doesn't know how to die. which sounds scarier? personally

something in the blood perhaps that makes it so around that time of human development they stop being able to ingest food and internally their body cannibalizes their own blood instead until there's nothing left in their veins
