I have no idea, but the impression to me from the outside with classical music is playing as close to the spirit of the original piece as possible. Doesn't that condition you into following the prescribed rules rather than being creative in your own way.

It's engrained from a young age. I learnt trumpet from age 11 and got to a decent standard (grade 8), but it was all just playing the dots. I had no idea how to improvise round what was in front of me and was very envious of those who could. Still never had the courage to risk trying it
