Congratulations to @deisseroth.bsky.social ! Optogenetics has transformed neuroscience. I'm also grateful for the open-source spirit Karl and colleagues championed by sharing optogenetic tools freely from the start. It made a huge difference for the field.

Excited to share our new paper in Nature Communications! 🎉 Recording neurons in human temporal cortex, we found that speech sounds and word meaning are both encoded in neural manifolds, and that speech sounds line up in time with word meaning, a signature of top-down prediction. 🧵

This is devastating not only for US scientists, but for science everywhere. Basic research into the brain & mind leads long term to better health outcomes, & also to better technology development including--if we are making appeals to government bodies--data providing the foundation for aligned AI.
