One of the issues is that the originating Zionist movement, not variant versions that exist today, was very much a militant one that saw the inhabitants of the then British Mandate of Palestine as people that did not deserve the land and should be removed, one way or another, often in dark terms.

Theodore Herzl and other leaders of the burgeoning Zionist movement repeatedly attempted to dehumanise the indigenous inhabitants of Palestine, advocating for displacement, if not outright extermination. It makes it difficult to parse modern Zionism from that militant, horrific original version.
