I was reading a lot of highbrow French literature for my degree and they were a perfect literary palate cleanser: immense fun to read, great characters and also it was like a completely alien world to me with their rich, horsey lifestyles. Great escapism.

As someone living in the back of beyond in Canada, they were just unbelievably glamorous and wonderfully foreign. And with the aid of age (and hindsight) I still love those books because, eventually, the baddies always lose and the good people win. Wonderful, glamorous karma. Plus horses and dogs.
