Rather than this I would make a different point: hauling people before congressional hearings is generally pointless, it’s not really accomplishing anything. None of these people are afraid of being mildly annoyed by politicians reciting their scripted talking points on C-SPAN for a couple of hours.

The mistake was (as @jamellebouie.net often points out) that a scary number of Americans read racism as honesty. So by leaning (correctly!) into the “he’s racist” framing, they accidentally just heightened the perceived “honesty” gap between him and Clinton. Dumb but it’s how it worked.

One would be good and the other would be bad because one cause is good and the other is bad. We are not in the realm of procedural justice concerns anymore, liberalism is not obligated to be neutral on the question of its own existence.
