what seems to be the issue here is that you just fundamentally do not believe that Cazador has absolute control over Astarion / the spawn. Cazador in-game doesn't NEED to lovebomb because *already has* complete control. You either don't know about that, or refuse to believe it.

Astarion is the worst book I've read in ages, and I've read some stinkers. Even Modelland by Tyra Banks is better. At least she had a vision. A batshit vision, but a vision. And there were themes. This book is so bad it makes me praise Modelland. Don't harass anyone, but don't waste your money.

I don't think the book had to be a complete dud. With the leeway given by WotC, an author could have told a compelling story set before Astarion's transformation, or one set right before the game where the Nautiloid is the "happy ending." But this has terrible authorial decisions at every turn.
