I'm nowhere near back to walking for two or so hours around these hills, but I am at least doing some active walking for at least fifteen minutes each day. It feels good to feel some muscle mass, eh, after being pretty sedentary since Covid.

The pacing stick was huge and came apart like a bi-pod. Metal or brass points on the end to make a click when he rotated them. Not a swagger stick at all. Research tells me they phased out during WW2.

I’ll always remember being taught to march by an irate staff sergeant (‘Staff’) at Sennybridge in Wales. I was on exercise and Staff (who was Coldstream Guards) pulled me out of the line for tick tocking. He used a massive pacing stick and preferred to say “daff-daight” instead of left-right!
