Have a look at the Commonwealth war memorial and see how many black and brown soldiers fought in ww2 then look up the Caribbean fighter pilots. Took until the 70s for their memorials to go up.

After the actual generations that fought a war have passed it becomes a culture war weapon in a way that it couldn’t while those who were there are still alive. Once they are gone, they can’t challenge the narrative in real time anymore. Their story is written, but they can’t be interviewed anymore.

His last few years were made much happier than they might have been due to amazingly kind neighbours and carers from many different cultures and backgrounds, who became like family. And of course, the amazing NHS staff who gave him (and us) so much support over the years.
