I'd argue that if the present state of masculinity is a a reaction to "equal rights," we're really in trouble, because we **don't** have equal rights, we just started considering how to get to them. And just the discussion has cause collective vapors among the menfolk.

Yes, a fun fact is that individuals who lived far outside standard gender roles — the women warriors, the mystics/seers/sorcerers, others — weren’t “allowed” to step outside, they were assumed/expected to be “other,” defined only in the context of their occupations and personal styles in doing them.
