Wonderful place, very much worth a visit. In 2023 we did a couple of days in Rome and then got the night train to Sicily. Woke up in the morning having crossed the sea by train-on-ferry overnight!

Terrific piece. The paranoid logic of security infects the thinking of left and right in a post-political world of mass surveillance, constant vetting & border militarisation — every social problem framed as an emergency to be risk-managed. Supermarkets now look like airports on terror alerts.
