Rented rooms 'til I was 3, then new council flat with a coke-fueled stove in the kitchen which gave heat, hot water and regular burns, an open coke fire in the living room. No radiators, gas for cooking, 2-bar electric fires. Coke delivered though a chute to a cupboard accessed from the kitchen.

I think a lot depends on where one grew up. I’m 61 and I never saw a domestic coal fire in London where I was born. We moved to Kendal Cumbria when I was 11 and they were common.
