Sadly, I think the growth in that category is just a compositional change. They added a bunch of new interdisciplinary categories in the 2020 update to the CIP (including digital humanities!), and the IR shops are only slowly folding them into their data collection.

I can’t speak for them, but I will say the step change in agentic model capacities in the last few months makes the specter of getting replaced even more real.
