As someone else in the thread noted, other versions of software can and often do get you 98% of the way there, in terms of features/interoperability, but it turns out that remaining 2% is often mission critical, and that's where Adobe/Microsoft, etc get you if you are a working professional.

So, as an example, as a professional author I can initially write in whatever program I like, but when it comes to editing documents come back from my editor/publisher, I need to have Word, otherwise I may have compatibility issues. I end up mostly writing in Word anyway. It's industry standard.

sorry I am only here sporadically, it appears being accessible is bad for my brain! like, I can barely answer emails, keeping up with live responses is beyond me. but I came to say: I won the aldiss award for worldbuilding! awarded by the estate of tim aldiss. I'm really chuffed.
