I am terribly sad to hear the great Douglas Dunn has died. I turn to a treasured copy of Terry Street, inscribed by both the author and its previous owner Derek Mahon!

Speaking as Balchin's biographer, I would say that The Small Back Room is quite a bit better than A Sort of Traitors and Mine Own Executioner is slightly better than it. All three books are well worth reading.

Thanks for trying this! One of my favourites among his novels, and certainly one of the most underrated. Beautifully written and very well observed. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
